To "thrive in a challenging competitive environment" is the gauntlet thrown down at this conference. This will be no easy task in a future where the present economic downturn is likely to continue. Housing and Motor manufacture have been severely hit and these are two of the major volume drivers of the coatings industry. As an intermediate product, paint and other coatings cannot be immune from the uncertainties currently associated with the traditional market sectors. To 'embrace the future' requires understanding and ideally quantifying those factors that are likely to be a given, and to deploy the best means available from established best practice and emerging technologies to remain competitive. In Darwinian terms those companies that will survive to embrace the future, will be the ones that can evolve and adapt to meet the changed circumstances.
