Optimizing Standard Patient Management through Order Sets - Impact on Care (Blood Cultures)

We show that order set design and support must be thoughtful to result in improved quality of care and reduced waste and that order set use should be monitored to confirm expected impact and detect unanticipated consequences. The value of a Clinical Information System is said to be highly dependent on Clinical Decision Support (CDS) including Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) [1]. A common form of CDS is the use of order sets (OS). A well-designed order set is effective because it: 1. is non-intrusive into workflow (in contrast to alerts), 2. makes ordering more efficient, 3. guides the user to order the most important interventions by implicitly reminding them of those interventions and bringing forward to the point of ordering relevant, timely and patient-specific information, 4. leverages known guidelines and best practices, and 5. reduces local area practice variation.
