ANESTHETIC MANAGEMENT OF SMALL MAMMALS

Increasingly individuals are seeking veterinary care for their pet small mammals. Rats, mice, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas and guinea pigs are among these. For many, these species are not as familiar as dogs and cats, and training in handling and knowledge of normal behaviors of these animals is often limited. This compounds the unique anesthetic challenges of their small size, presence of latent diseases and range of strains, and varied responses to anesthetic agents. Following a review of general anesthetic considerations the clinical application of injectable and inhalation anesthetic techniques will be discussed.
