Both driver information systems and advanced assistance functions help drivers guide their vehicles. To do this, parallel, redundant processing of the respective driving task by mechanical sensor methods is generally necessary. The increasing focus on co-operative (Car2X) but also map-based applications, requires that vehicle positioning is viewed as part of the sensor basis required for this. This represents a fundamental change in our understanding of the role of positioning technologies, as these have so far been used exclusively for strategic planning purposes. For example, the integration of actively intervening driver assistance systems creates new requirements with regard to the reliability of positioning solutions. Given this background, the Braunschweig University of Technology and Volkswagen AG have developed a positioning system which uses sensors suitable for series production and meets the outlined requirements. In addition to improving the evaluation of a vehicle's state, this work also focused heavily on developing and implementing appropriate mechanisms for ensuring data integrity.
