Introduction. Phytosterolemia (sitosterolemia) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by a mutation of ABCG5/ABCG8 genes [1]. This disease is characterized by an accumulation of food-derived phytosterols in a whole body except for brain, thereby inducing tendon and tuberous xanthomas and premature coronary atherosclerosis. The diagnosis of phytosterolemia is generally based on the formation of these xanthomas as well as the increased amounts of phytosterols, such as P-sitosterol and campesterol, in serum of affected subjects. Thus, it is necessary to determine phytosterols in serum for the proper diagnosis and treatment of phytosterolemia.
