The widely accepted definition of health proposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as 'a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity', is still a fundamental basic point of noise and sleep researchers. During the last 30 years, the impact of nocturnal road traffic noise on sleep has been well-documented by several researchers. As a result of intensive research, the WHO has come to summarize the relationship between night noise and health effects. In their Night Noise Guidelines, continuous sound level during the night (Ln) causes following effects: - < 30dB - no substantial biological effects are normally observed. - 30-40 dB - primary sleep disturbances are increasing. Vulnerable groups are affected to some degree. - 40-55 dB - sharp increase in adverse health effects by many of the exposed population. Vulnerable groups observed to be severely affected. - > 55dB - adverse health effects occur frequently and a high percentage of the population highly annoyed.
