Dendritic cells (DC) are crucial in contact allergy induction. Here we report an assay based on monocyte-derived DCs applying CD86 surface expression changes and viability as indicators of hapten induced activation. Compared to LLNA data all tested substances were identified correctly. By using DCs from single donors instead of DC-pools, the data were improved noticeably. This alternative method provides a basic application for assessing the allergic potential of chemicals.
