Projective Representations and the Mackey Obstruction - A Survey

In 1958 G,W, Mackey published his paper "Unitary representations of group extensions, I" in Acta Mathematica, where he discussed projective representations of locally compact groups and their importance to the study of representations of group extensions via the theory of induced representations In this survey I will give a brief overview of the work of Mackey and many others in the area of projective representation theory, and discuss the important role that projective representations and the Mackey obstruction have played over the years in the study of certain families of operators and the operator algebras through they generate.
