This investigation analyses the effect of introducing a hydrogen (H_2)/carbon monoxide (CO) mixture, upstream of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), in an attempt to support the regeneration process. This was followed by optimisation of a periodic spray strategy in an attempt to minimise the volume of mixture required. The experimental data showed that the mixture addition supported the regeneration process by both increasing the filter temperature via an exothermic reaction and through a chemical reaction oxidising the accumulated soot. The optimised strategy featured a 10.10 cycle, demonstrating 50% less volume than a constant spray strategy while featuring similar regeneration capabilities.
