In 2001, $1.7 billion investment went to R&D supporting M&S; 2009 budget, the figure is now $3.5 billion. The American competitiveness commitment over a 10 year period is to double to $136 billion. The goal is for the US to lead the world in competitiveness and innovation. The American Competes Act (currently under consideration in the Congress) emphasizes the significance of mathematics for students and teachers involved in M&S.
