Ultra high flow elastomers are most commonly used as processing aids and materbatch carriers, but also have become the key elastomer component in hot melt adhesives. Ultra high flow elastomers are low in viscosity and are relatively shear insensitive, allowing them to disperse, wet, and flow very readily. Low molecular weight polyolefin elastomers have sufficient mechanical strength to hold in high levels of fillers and other additives, making them ideal for formulation for processing applications requiring low viscosity such as injection molding, spraying or knife coating. Applications will be discussed where ethylene-octene-based elastomers with this combination of low viscosity and high mechanical strength have been used to solve adhesion and flow problems.
