Continuous lengths of plastic are fed under pressure into a channel in an ultrasonic sonotrode and melted by the effect of high amplitude vibration before leaving via a cross-channel as a flowable melt. Appts. for the process includes an ultrasonic sonotrode with an inlet channel for feeding polymer strip. At the end of the channel is an area of high amplitude vibration and the channel enters a cross-channel leading to a side outlet. A feeding wheel for the plastic is located in an area of the sonotrode with low amplitude vibration.
