Process and appts. for extracting samples of polymer melt from a reactor is described. Part of the contents of the reactor are continuously recirculated and a sample is taken from the melt stream and cooled until solid. Appts. comprises a submersible pump with a tube on the pressure side leading to a four way tap whose ball has a passage which can be aligned to any of the four ports. A sample container is under one of the outlet ports and a moving piston is in the opposing port to force the sample into the container. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables samples of reacting polymers to be taken at random from a reactor under vacuum or positive pressure phases.
