"Vulcameter" (cure test appts. for elastomers) tests are made with a closed (or closable) mould cavity for a test moulding by injecting the material and subjecting it to high temp. and shear or torsional stress, then measuring deformation resistance against time. More specifically, a conventionally mounted mould has a cavity (1) to produce the test piece (2) of elastomer between the top (3) and lower (4) tools. The shot is injected through the gate (6) of a cylinder (7) fitted with a plunger. If the two tools (3,4) do not seal off the sides of the cavity an outer ring (9) can surround its split line (8). It is useful to enclose the mould system in a sealed chamber containing slightly pressurised and cleaned air. This chamber has a top (10) and bottom (11) cover and is arranged to open when the mould opens. The split line (12) between its top (10) and bottom (11) halves is at the same level as that (8) of the cavity (1). ADVANTAGE - The method does not require test pieces to be produced beforehand. It provides accurate tests and is simple to perform.
