The demand of further increase of mechanical, tribological and chemical loads leads to increasing requirements for components of high performance sliding or friction systems. Oil lubricated multiple disc clutches for example play an important role in power transmission of modern gear boxes in automotive engineering and new design solutions as well as friction materials are needed for future advanced engines. The transmission of greater power at a given or even reduced installation size call for greater values of friction coefficient, independence of friction coefficient on velocity, load carrying capacity, thermal stability, damage tolerance against temporary thermal overloading and wear resistance for reliable long term service. Advanced ceramic materials as Al_2O_3, ZrO_2 or SiC offer a high potential as friction
