Fluoroquinolones are a class of powerful antibiotics commonly used in human and veterinary medicine. Because of their wide use, fluoroquinolones enter the environment via wastewater effluent and soil applications of human sludge or agricultural manure. The persistence of these bioactive components is demonstrated by their widespread detection in the environment. While the levels of fluoroquinolones in the environment are marginal, their concentrations approach the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for several strains of bacteria.
