Sulfated Zirconia has attracted intense attentions for its strong acidity and activities in the catalysis of alkane isomerization at relatively mild condition. Mesoporous zirconia with high surface area are beneficial towards spreading a large amount of sulfate and the subsequent formation of tetragonal sulfated zirconia which is the catalytic active phase in the isomerization of hydrocarbon. The addition of small amount of p-block metal(Al, Ga) oxides dramatically enhances the catalytic activity for n-butane conversion. Recently, we found the loading of alumina not only retarded the phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic, and retain more sulfur, but also stabilized the mesostructure of catalysts in the AS/MP-ZrO2 system. It is thus desirable to further investigate the promoting effect of gallium oxide on mesoporous sulfated zirconia and compare with the Al-promoted catalyst, the AS/MP-ZrO2 system.
