In the light of the demands arising from social changes and a new dynamic in the management of educational institutions, new leaders are expected to be able to transform organizations in a proactive way. This raises some key issues such as how to bring about professional standards of excellence in institutions and change them significantly without failing to keep their souls by preserving their values and a sense of mission. In this new environment, every institution needs transformation more than just adaptation to new circumstances, and it is essential that the changes are both continuous and creative to ensure they are successful. Thus a process of ‘learning in order to change’ and ‘changing in order to learn’ is the key factor in strengthening an institution so that it can move forward strategically in this new context. This requires a different type of leader who has the right kind of expertise to lead people, change processes, and form an inspiring vision for the future. This paper seeks to provide a sense of direction to the development of a new kind of leadership which introduces fundamental changes to institutions and thus makes organizations more innovative by increasing their effectiveness, creativity, vitality, and learning capability. Finally, the paper explores the reasons why there is a need for a new leadership and new leaders and discusses leadership in its capacity to inspire, strategise, motivate, foster improvement and communicate.
