From the world of construction to the medical, textile and packaging industries, there is a growing demand for films and coatings that are waterproof, yet permeable to moisture or gasses; so-called breathable coatings and films. The DSM's Arnitel TPE-E is successfully applied in these breathable films. Examples of successes are: roofing membranes, rainwear, sportswear, medical gowns, medical drapes and plasters. Although several other materials and concepts are used in breathable film, TPE-E based systems have specific advantages. Compared to microporous film monolithic Arnitel film has much better barrier properties to water droplets, viruses, bacteria and blood. Secondly Arnitel outperforms TPU based material in processing behaviour, as it has better melt strength and the rheology can be tailored to the film production processes of the customer. Superior chemical resistance gives TPEs an advantage in sterilization. Finally, in washing for textile durables, chemical resistance also contributes to advantages in the washing portion of the cycle, and the high melt temperatures give TPE and advantage in the drying portion of the cycle. Recent developments at DSM further increased the advantages of TPE-E. DSM has launched a new product range of Arnitel TPE in 2007, branded under the name VT (Vapor Transmission). The products in the VT range, like VT3104 and VT3108, are having optimal rheology for film production. These grades enable high processing speeds and very thin films (10 micron) on standard extrusion lines, without the use of carrier membranes. Furthermore the VT range is pushing the limits in the breathable properties of monolithic membranes. A membrane of 15 micron VT3108 shows an MVTR of 16.600 gr/m~2/day (ASTM E96BW, 38°C, 50% RH) and is among the highest available on the market. Additional to the VT range DSM Research developed a patented UV stabilizing masterbatch E2-UV for application in roofing underlays and housewrap enabling compliance with the latest European norms (EN 13859).
