Desarrollos agronomicos que inciden en el uso de fertilizantes en el Cono Sur El Programa Latinoamerica-Cono Sur de IPNI~1

Grain production,mainly soybean,has sharply increased in the Southern Cone of Latin America in the last 15 years.Fertilizer consumption has accompanied the increase in cropping area and contributed to increase grain yields.Despite of the increases in fertilizer consumption,soil nutrient balances are still negative,and with continuous soil organic matter losses affect soil quality and productivity in the region.The development of biofuels would lead to an intensification of grain production and fertilizer use because of higher grain prices.The Latin America-Southern Cone program of IPNI (International Plant Nutrition Institute) develops its research and educational programs looking at i) the evaluation of potential needs of N,P,K,S,and other nutrients in different crops along the region,ii) the development and promotion of sustainable fertilization management systems for high yielding crops,and iii) the generation of updated information and educational materials on sustainable nutrient management for member companies,dealers,agronomists and farmers.This paper discusses the results of the more recent research projects developed in collaboration with governmental institutions,universities,and private organizations,and the educational activities of the program.
