A Comparison of Interface Specification Techniques

There is a dramatic increase in the extent to which software systems interact with other software systems. The need to create interface specifications of software systems so that they can be used from more than one programming language is frequently met. We have developed a technology for creating interface specifications of software systems in different programming languages. Our approach consists of writing specifications of interfaces at an abstract level and then automating the generation of their counterparts in different programming languages. These counterparts are referred to as bindings. This paper compares different techniques for writing interface specifications and justifies our selection of abstract specifications.
