This new AISC standard will replace five existing AISC Specifications; the 1989 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings-Allowable Stress Design and Plastic Design, the 1989 Specification for Allowable Stress Design of Single Angles, the 1999 Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, the 2000 Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for Steel Hollow Structural Sections (HSS), and the 2000 Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for Single-Angle Members. A new "unified" format will permit the use of either the Allowable Stress Design (ASD) or the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methods, as well as incorporate the single angle and HSS member and connection design provisions. Additionally, important revisions and updates have been made in the various chapters throughout the standard, including the following: an expanded scope, analysis provisions allowing the designer more flexibility, composite design based on higher strength materials and recent research, connection design, including expanded HSS connection configurations, a new appendix on design for fire conditions, and in addition to the usual historical commentary in the back of the specification, User Notes will be interspersed throughout the text.
