Three years ago, a group of wood associations, research organizations and government agencies launched the U.S. Woodworks program to support the use of wood in non-residential and multi-family buildings. Wood had long been the material of choice in residential construction, and its cost effectiveness, design flexibility and low carbon footprint were among the benefits helping to expand its use in other building types. But there were challenges, including a widespread lack of training and education focused on the design of larger wood buildings. Woodworks was created as a pilot program in seven states to determine whether a combined effort aimed at providing free technical support and resources to architects, engineers and others could effectively address those challenges.
