TEACHING INNOVATION IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EUROPEAN HIGHER EDUCATION AREA: AN ECTS EXPERIENCE IN CHEMISTRY

This contribution describes the teaching innovation pilot project in the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) carried out at the Chemistry Faculty of the University of Valencia during the last four years (http://www.uv.es/giequim). The project, developed in four courses of the Chemistry degree, has been implemented in order to test new learning strategies in our particular context. The main features of the experience are the change from teaching-centred to learningcentred education, with the adoption of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and the use of active methodologies in the classroom, the importance of generic competences, such as teamwork, oral and written communication, capacity for analysis and synthesis, knowledge of a second language, critical and self-critical abilities, etc., the coordination of the teachers, a personalized service for the students, and the regular use of the technologies of information and communication and e-learning tools. Nowadays, we have six pilot groups in which the novel methodologies are employed in all the core and compulsory modules, as well as in some of the optional ones. The project involves 53 teachers from 13 different departments and around 200 students, which have voluntarily chosen to participate in the experience.
