摘要

In this paper, I use conversational discourse analysis to explore the influence of words and themanner in which they are spoken among adolescents in like-gendered groups. I ask in what ways arestudent group participation structures defined by conflicts and how does social positioning within thegroups influence speech events in the areas of framing, turn-taking and participation structures.Conflicts in the small groups were frequent, but conflict resolution, often in the form of reframing verbalinteractions, allowed the students to scaffold their learning as they developed new ideas. In addition,turn-taking within participation structures were often misleading due to shifting social positions withinthe groups. I believe students should be encouraged to share their ideas so that their group memberscan build on them and advance learning together.
