The Del Mar Fairgrounds (Fairgrounds) has reduced its solid waste disposal, conserved resources through its recycling program and, as a direct result, has an annual financial benefit of over $1.1 million. The Fairgrounds has numerous events attracting over 3.5 million visitors and housing over 200 horses year-round creating a large amount of solid waste. The Resource Conservation Team (Team) developed a recycling program to comply with legislation and to reduce our waste to the landfill. Our Team has adopted a goal of “Zero Waste” and has developed a Pilot Project named the “Zero Waste Zone,” established during the Annual San Diego County Fair. Our Team has also made great strides in the development of the Fairgrounds Resource Conservation Program which includes the installation of a one (1) Megawatt Solar Energy Array.
