The global objectives of saving fuel and reducing CO_2 creates new requirements on design, including transmission components. In order to fulfill these requirements, lightweight construction plays a decisive role, since the large moving masses consume energy that can be reduced by the use of lightweight construction concepts. Material substitution is the approach most frequently used to achieving lightweight solutions. On the other hand, revising the design can lead to innovative solutions that are more effective in reducing weight and are also very economical. Schaeffler presents innovative products that are useful for design of modern manual transmissions with optimized mass.
