This paper is based on the presentation thatwas given at the symposium. Described as a virtual roundtable, the presentation combined the inputs from four experts in the field of colour imaging and colour management. The theme of the roundtable was the relationship between colour management and the colour science principles upon which it is founded. These principles include colorimetry, the Standard Colorimetric Observer, colour appearance, viewing environments and observer adaptation. Elements critical to colour management but little discussed in the colour science world include colour encodings, image states and colour renderings. The first part of the paper is an overview of colour management and the general approaches used today. The second part discusses the issues and themes that the roundtable participants wanted to bring to the attention of the CIE community.
