The scattering theory is derived on the basis of axiomatic relations between the characteristic sizes of turbid media (size of particles, distances between them and the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic wave). However, the elementary volumes for different cloud components differ by 6-12 orders of magnitude. The default size chosen for the elementary volume corresponds to droplets; it is too large for molecules and aerosols, and the multiple scattering within the elementary volume should be taken into account for these two components. Neglect of the break leads to disagreement between the calculated and observed cloud absorptions of the shortwave solar radiation.
