Health claims for food are driven by industry's desire to meet consumers' growing interest in protecting and improving their health through dietary choice. Consequently the global market has seen an increase in products described as 'functional foods'- that is, foods that are "usually understood to be a food having health promoting benefits and/or disease having health promoting benefits and/or disease preventing properties preventing properties over and above over and above its usual its usual nutritional value" (British Nutrition Foundation).
