The L1{sub}0 phase of equiatomic FePt is widely regarded as the potential material for perpendicular magnetic recording for ultra-high areal densities [1]. It has been reported that CrRu underlayer and Pt intermediate layer were used to induce FePt (001) texture and reduce the initial layer, respectively. The initial layer in FePt grown on Pt intermediate layer was found to be significantly thick of about 3.5nm [2]. Therefore, MgO, a refractory oxide is expected to have less inter-diffusion than the metallic intermediate layer. In this paper, effects of MgO intermediate layer on the structure and magnetic properties of FePt film were investigated. The metal-oxide interface on the growth of initial layer in FePt layer was also discussed.
