Although quite a few vibration analysis methods for bearing fault diagnosis have been reported successful, new problems still arise in practical applications of these methods in some special situations. The specific difficulty encountered in this research project on bearing fault detection is the plunger pumps attached to and driven by the gearbox generate very strong impulsive vibrations that make impact-recognition-based signal analysis approaches ineffective. A hybrid method was proposed that combines spectrum analysis, digital filtering, and crest factor analysis. The proposed method was proved effective in its application to more than fifty gearboxes.
