In the past we have ascribed the stimulating effect of photobiomodulation to the potential of visible light to change the cellular redox state through production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by a photosensitization process. The ease with which various ROS cross the cell membrane, their high chemical reactivity and consequential short half-life make them ideal candidates for cellular messengers. It is known that visible light can be absorbed by cellular photosensitizers such as cytochromes, flavins/riboflavins and NADP. Absorption of light by these photo sensitizers cause their excitation and relaxation by transferring electrons to O_ thereby generating the ROS.
