Photosensitizers (PS) for photodynamic therapy (PDT) can be divided in two large groups - those originated from natural sources (e.g. Photofrin, HPD, benzoporphyrin A, chlorins, bacteriochlorins) and purely synthetic dyes (e.g. meta-tetrahydroxyphenyl chlorin (m-THPC), lutetium texaphyrin, porphycenes, phthalocyanines).The purpose of our group is the development of new efficient PS in the class of phthalocyanine (Pc) derivatives and their analogues. Their advantages over other PS are comparative availability, intense absorption in red and near infrared spectral region ("therapeutic window"). The enhanced luminescent ability of Pc enables their application also for diagnostic purposes, and increased oxidative stability - usage as drugs their storage stable aqueous solutions. So, the second generation PS Photosens with improved spectral properties for PDT was developed based on sulphonated aluminum Pc.
