Oxide materials on the basis of stabilized zirconium and cerium dioxides are widely used as catalysts for various oil processing reactions and removal of nitrogen oxides from exhausts under oxidative conditions in the presence of hydrocarbons. In the current study we investigated two groups of materials: (1) materials containing separate zirconia nanoparticles with typical size 10-30 A localized between the aluminosilicate layers of natural clays; and (2) materials containing mesoscopic aggregates of approx 50 A zirconia nanoparticles. O_2~- radical anions formed on the surface by different methods were used as spin probes for characterization of the nanostructured zirconia-containing catalysts by ESR [1].
