Comminution of alpha alumina down to 15-50 nm involves an intensive mechanical treatment by steel balls. As a result, even after acid leaching, the residual content of iron varies from 0.02 to 1 wt. %[1]. Changing atmosphere in the mill enables us to establish that the decisive influence on the quantity of iron cations substituted for the aluminium in oxide lattice is exerted by the water vapor concentration rather than that of oxygen.
