Based on an identification and evaluation of key music listening technologies of the electronic and digital age, a gradual individualization of musical choice has been identified as a major driving force for developments in this area. Technologies like the home stereo system or the portable music player have become independent of or even incompatible with many of the social interactions which our society has developed around the consumption of music. Lately, locative media and context-aware technologies offer opportunities with regards to a consideration of social interaction design. Based on an analysis of existing projects in this field, we have suggested three strategies for creating social music listening experiences while maintaining personal musical choice: sharing musical choice, democratizing musical choice and soundscape integration.
