Data mining is a rapidly expanding field with many new research results reported and new systems recently developed. Data mining presents organizations with a vital decision-enhancing environment that develops new opportunities by transforming data into a strategic weapon. We provide a comprehensive overview of the data mining concept, and review its theoretical fundamentals and benefits. We also present a classification of data mining techniques and success stories. Databases have become an integral part of information systems architecture. In the past two decades, we have seen different database systems developed independently and used in different applications domains (Athauda, 2000). However, today's interconnected networks and advanced applications such as data warehousing, data mining, knowledge discovery and intelligent data access to information on the Web, have created a need for integrated access to such varied, independent and distributed database systems (Athauda, 2000).
