The idea of "mindset" became widely known due to Dweck's 2008 book. A person's mindset guides a great deal of how they approach life - and especially how one approaches education. Dweck defines two different mindsets: a "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset". Someone with a fixed mindset believes that their intelligence is fixed and unchangeable. On the other hand, someone with a growth mindset believes that their intelligence is changeable and can grow as they learn more. Most people's mindset lies along a continuum with these two mindsets at either end. In addition to other outcomes, the mindset that a person has determines how they interpret mistakes they make; while someone with a fixed mindset thinks mistakes are failures and result from their innate lack of ability, someone with a growth mindset view s mistakes as opportunities to reflect and learn more.
