The development of mesopic photometry has raised interest in the international lighting community for several decades. Still today there are no internationally accepted mesopic photometric systems. This means that suitable methods to evaluate the visual effectiveness of lighting products and lighting levels in the mesopic region are not available. There have been a lot of attempts to develop mesopic photometry, but most of the works have concentrated on brightness evaluation. Towards the end of 1990.s the interest for a visual task performance based approach for developing mesopic photometry has grown among the research community. CIE technical committee TC 1-58 has been established to propose a model for the basis of performance based mesopic photometry. The work of this TC is currently underway. Data from all over the world is collected to form a sound basis for a performance based system of mesopic photometry. One of the inputs to TC 1-58 work is the work of a European research consortium MOVE. In this work the visual performance of night-time driving was investigated by three visual sub-tasks. By the development of links to visual tasks and mesopic visual performance, this performance based approach has provided new mesopic spectral sensitivity functions and offers new solutions for mesopic photometry. As outcome of this work models for mesopic photometry were developed.The findings of MOVE will be integrated in the CIE TC 1-58 work to provide contribution to the development of mesopic photometry.
