Ion implantation has attracted much interest in resent years for modification of a material. Recent study by the authors reported that addition of chlorine ion to a titanium nitride coating resulted in reduction in friction coefficient [1]. This indicated there is possibility for improving the friction characteristic of steel by the implantation of an adequate ion to controlling friction. In this study, phosphorous (P) ions ware implanted to a steel surface with different distribution profiles. The major of this study is to investigate friction characteristics of P-ion implanted steels under oil lubricated condition.
