Lubricants are generally used to achieve low friction on sliding surfaces in many kinds of machine components. It is reported that lubricant forms absorbed layer on sliding surface. Many researches on relationship between the absorbed layer and frictional properties have been conducted. However, there are few reports on structure at solid-liquid interface, that is, density and its thickness of the absorbed layer of lubricant near surface. In this study, we measured the accurate density of lubricant near surface using neutron reflectometry. The neutron can penetrate into almost all metals and the reflectometry is used to analyze the vertical structure, such as density and thickness, at the target surface or interface.
