In order to clarify the surface generation mechanism in high precision or ultra-precision machining, the deformation mechanism in the vicinity of surface based on the burnishing action of the cutting edge roundness were examined experimentally and calculated by FEM. As a result, it is clarified that the deformation process in the relief surface is based on the combined process of compressive and tensile processes by burnishing action.
