Ground borne vibration is a growing environmental concern for railway operators and infrastructure managers. Due to the large efforts and high costs associated with in situ testing, numerical models are often preferred for parametric studies and the design of vibration mitigation measures on track. In the present work, the vibration reduction achieved by the use of under-sleeper pads has been verified as a function of the dynamic stiffness of the soil by considering, separately, the free field mobility, the wheel-rail interaction force, and finally the vibration level in the free field. The results of this study show that the modification of the interaction force is as important as the change of the free field mobility. Both quantities should therefore be considered in the design of mitigation measures.
