Experience of Burden Distribution Trial on United States Steel's Granite City Works 'B' Blast Furnace

For many years, United States Steel's (U. S. Steel) Granite City Works "B" blast furnace had experienced some operating difficulties due to low top-gas temperature and high wall temperatures. A burden distribution computer simulation indicated that the original charging sequence had resulted in a very thin coke layer and almost no coke at the center of the furnace. As a consequence, a large proportion of the pellet charge went to the center and reduced center gas flow. Using the burden distribution computer simulation model, a new charge sequence was proposed for a trial, which forms a thicker coke layer and employs a substantial "kicker" to push the coke to the center. The new sequence increased the top temperature, improved the furnace permeability, and enabled the facility to realize a substantial savings related to coke and natural gas usage.
