Bromomethane(CH3Br)is used as a soil fumigant and is a major reactant responsible for destroying the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer.This compound is also emitted during biomass burning and biosynthesized by marine microalgae.Overall more than 1,600 other brominated organic compounds(BOCs)are naturally produced.Many of these are thought to be used as natural pesticides and can be found in human breast milk,marine food webs and in antique whale oils that pre-date industrial production of BOCs.
