Due to environmental concerns, ultra-low S-containing diesel fuel has been mandated. However, diesel contains refractory S-containing compounds such as the 4,6-dialkylsubstituted dibenzothiophenes which require high pressure hydrogen at high pressure for hydrotreating due to the steric hindrance of the alkyl groups. Selective adsorption of these refractory S-containing compounds has been a subject of interest since adsorption could occur at a lower temperature and pressure without hydrogen and hence reduce the cost for producing ultra-low S-containing diesel'.
