As embedded software on microcontroller products increases in complexity, software reusability becomes more important than ever. With software reuse, product development costs and time to market can be reduced, extra product features can be implemented at low cost and testing complexity can be simplified. Software reusability not only depends on the software implementation approach but also involves many other aspects like processor architecture, C compiler and development tools interface and the software eco-systems working together to provide compatible solutions. In this paper we will study the various areas involved for achieving high levels of software compatibility in microcontrollers, with specific focus on the CPU architecture.
