Barrier performance to gas permeation of ceramic coated layers deposited on flexible polymer, films is great interest to food packaging, medical device packaging and flat panel display industries. For lower gas transmission, the authors provided a new type film that a ceramic layer deposited on a polymer coated film. The film for good barrier performance is important to control interfacial properties between each layer and films. A several kind of polymer coated materials were prepared for changing surface free energy the films before and after depositing ceramic layer. The ceramic layer is adopted a single condition that mixed material of SiO{sub}2 and Al{sub}2O{sub}3. Water transmittance is not related to surface energy of just polymer coated films, however after depositing a ceramic layers, a strong correlation is observed between the transmittance and surface free energy. The phenomenon is considered that polarity of the polymer layers changes structure of ceramic coated layers.
