Scrap wood particles may be used as solid support in a fluidized bio filter for VOC treatment. In order to select the materials whose characteristics are suitable for both fluidization and biodegradation process, an hydrodynamic study was performed. Different kinds of scrap wood particles were tested for which maps of flow regimes were drawn by varying air velocity and bed height. The effect of particle size and moisture content on fluidization regime was thus pointed out. Fine particles with 45% moisture content were proved to fluidize with a Tuyere distributor in channelling and slugging regime. Coarse wood particles with 45% humidity commonly -used in fixed bed bio filters, were considered as less adapted due to limitations borne by their fluidization regimes. Ethanol bio filtration in the fluidized bed was afterwards tested for various inlet loadings. Abatement vary between 80 to 100% in the operating range studied.
